Part of the Diablo Range in Contra Costa County, Mt. Diablo overlooks the eastern San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California. For nearby residents and visitors, the mountain boasts a variety of activities to enjoy the outdoors. From hikes to beacon lighting ceremonies, check out what Mt. Diablo has to offer.

The orange glow of the sky is always breathtaking at the summit. Keep an eye out for the progression of the Mt. Diablo’s shadow across the California Central Valley to the Sierra Nevada, which casts for a few moments above the horizon in the post-sunset sky.

In the winter, Bay Area residents can watch the rare descent of snow cascading down the mountain from the lower reaches of the park all the way to the peak. The summit can receive as much as six inches of snow as was the case in March 2006.

Beacon Lighting Ceremony

On December 7th of each year, Mt. Diablo’s Beacon is lit to honor the survivors of Pearl Harbor and as a tribute to those who lost their lives. The Beacon is lit at sunset and stays illuminated till dawn. Since visitors may leave later than usual, this is one of the rare opportunities to view the sunset from the peak without an overnight stay.

March of the Tarantulas

During the fall, visitors to the park can enjoy Mt. Diablo’s annual “March of the Tarantulas” to watch the migration of male tarantulas emerging from their burrows to seek mates. Guided hikes are offered through the Mt. Diablo Interpretive Association.

Hikes and Trails

Mt. Diablo offers several paths to enjoy lush canyons, creeks, and several types of flora and fauna. Audible Guides are available for free. Listen to lively interviews and music combined with the rushing wind, peaceful chirps, and the growls of wildlife as you traverse the mountain terrain. The Mount Diablo Challenge

Held annually on the first Sunday in October, the Mount Diablo Challenge is a bicycle race attracting between 800 and 1,100 riders each year to compete in a mass-start format. The course begins at the Athenian School at the base of the mountain then climbs 3,249 feet in 10.8 miles. Riders of every age and ability are welcome and the challenge benefits Save Mount Diablo’s land preservation programs. Prizes are awarded to the top overall male and female finishers and in age-specific categories with the most coveted being the “One-Hour” T-shirt honoring those who finish the course in less than an hour.

Moonlight on the Mountain

A Mt. Diablo anniversary celebration, “Moonlight on the Mountain” is a one-of-a-kind event sponsored by Save Mount Diablo. Guests can enjoy drinks, hors d’oeuvres and a sit-down dinner, silent and live auctions, and live music. The event takes place on a flat plateau next to China Wall (a rock formations that resemble a small version of the Great Wall in China), featuring a gorgeous view of undeveloped rolling hills and the summit of Mt. Diablo illuminated by the light of the rising moon.
